Creating an online FarmTreeTool
For a project in Rwanda "Support to Public Investment Planning in Agroforestry", FarmTreeServices is collaborating with a local GIS-expert, Vital Nzabanita. Vital generated an inventory map that shows Agroforestry tree densities all over the country. This information allowed us to project erosion and declining yields in areas with low tree densities. It also allowed us to project stabilising soil fertility as a result of tree planting; and resulting stabilising tree and crop production.
An interactive Table that allows District Staff to compare Baseline and +Investment scenarios was put online, so that staff can always evaluate the likely effect of planting fruit trees, or timber trees, or trees for fodder production. The Table compares baseline and + project production of food crops, fuel wood, timber; but also carbon stored in the system. It also compares Added-Value-Per-Working-Day, and gender-segregated labour burdens. In that way, District Staff can identify the areas where Agroforestry promotion pays best in terms of production, Carbon sequestration, increased Net Present Value, or Internal Rate of Return.
Early May, 2019, staff of Gicumbi, Karongi and Gicumbi district were trained on using such data for their District Annual Planning, as to develop eligible Project Profile Documents for submission to the Ministry of Local Development.
